Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that currently affects 450,000 individuals in Ireland, with a notable proportion of these being adolescents. Despite the availability of effective treatments, including inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators, a limited comprehension of asthma as a chronic condition and its management continues to hinder optimal self-management. Those aged 0 to 15 years account for 1,885 (43%) of all inpatient hospitalisations for asthma in 2016, accounting for 5.6% of respiratory inpatient bed days in that age range. This is a statistic that could be significantly reduced through improved adherence to prescribed medication. Research indicates that adherence to asthma treatments is enhanced when patients understand the purpose and mechanism of their medications. However, many adolescents encounter challenges with medication adherence, often as a result of insufficient knowledge on how to manage their condition.
This project aims to develop a patient-oriented educational digital resource focused on the informational needs of adolescents affected by asthma. The resource will offer clear tailored information about asthma, trigger factors, medications, and the benefits of adherence. The resource will contribute to the existing resources for youth with chronic conditions hosted on www.Steppingup.ie website. The resource seeks to empower adolescents with the knowledge and skills needed for effective self-management.
This project will utilise patient and public involvement research to collect insights from adolescents with asthma, ensuring that the resource is tailored to their needs. Collaboration with a respiratory clinic in Tallaght University Hospital and healthcare professionals will further refine the content. Ultimately, this digital educational resource is aimed at improving adolescents’ understanding and self-management.
